Lucas Paqueta, a midfielder for West Ham United, has been accused by the Football Association (FA) with four violations of the organization's betting regulations.
The breaches are linked to his actions in four of West Ham's Premier League matches: Leicester City on 12 November 2022, Aston Villa on 12 March 2023, Leeds United on 21 May 2023, and AFC Bournemouth on 12 August 2023.
It is alleged that the Brazilian international intentionally attempted to be booked by the referee in these fixtures in order to influence the betting market and enable "one or more individuals to profit from betting."
Paqueta has responded to this news by issuing a statement on his social media platform, stating, "I am astonished and disheartened that the FA has taken the decision to charge me." I have assisted in the investigation at every stage for a period of nine months and have furnished all available information.
"I vehemently defend myself against the allegations and will exhaust myself in an effort to clear my name." I will refrain from offering any additional commentary as a result of the ongoing process.
Paqueta has been granted until June 3, 2024, to respond to these charges, unless an extension is requested. The FA has stated that they will refrain from providing any additional commentary regarding these accusations until the case has been resolved.
Sandro Tonali was sanctioned for misconduct in relation to the FA's betting regulations, resulting in a suspended two-month suspension, a £20,000 ($25,427.10) fine, and a warning. This news follows the sanction.
